What are Shola Flowers? The Beauty of Eco-Friendly Botanicals

Shola flowers (often called Sola wood flowers) are ivory-white blossoms founding in ordinary marshy regions of Odisha and Bengal. Hand carved from the inner pith of an aquatic plant, they appear like delicate paper or carved wood flowers, but they are actually made from a unique, sponge-like organic material which is 100% biodegradable.

The Material

Most of these shola flowers are from the marshlands of India, where the incredibly unique Aeschynomene aspera plant grows. Unlike traditional wood taken from trees, shola is sourced from the pith, the soft core from the plant stem. That is why it is so lightweight compared to woodcarved flowers.

The Texture

Unlike its appearance, a shola flower is surprisingly soft, flexible, and also porous. Its natural disposition creates a matte finish that mimics the look of real flowers. Thus, touching it feels something like touching a blend of wood and the softest blanket in the world.

Why it Matters

Since its made from the pith of a plant, it’s 100% biodegradable and is the top choice for decor and dried bridal bouquets for eco-conscious buyers. It provides the sophisticated appearance of roses while honoring a traditional craft that has been passed down through generations of skilled artisans.

The Art of Hand-Carved Sola Wood Flowers

Artisans obtain a slim white sheath by peeling off the brown bark of the marshy plant. Since the material is lightweight, they cut it into small sheets called “Kap” or thin slices called “Paturi” which serves as their raw material to make them. Then, they are carefully folded over themselves and the edges are tightly pulled together. Using a metal knife called “khat” and a pair of scissors called “kanchi”, they carve these sheets into intricate and geometric floral varieties that are used for bridal bouquets, dried flower arrangements and home decor. Because they are handmade, no two flowers are exactly alike, truly bringing out the timeless tradition behind this craft.

Creative Ways to Style Shola Flowers in Your Decor

  • Long-lasting Bouquets: A cluster of shola roses in a vase is an excellent dining table centerpiece
  • Shola Flower Torans: Attach shola flowers onto a twine to create a thoran display for your door or entryway.
  • Mixed Textures Bouquet: Shola flowers paired with dried elements like pampas grass creates a modern look.

Benefits of Choosing Shola Over Fresh or Silk Flowers

  • There’s no need for water or sunlight. Simply brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush to get rid of the dust and that’s it.
  • There’s no risk of pollen allergies since they are made from a plant’s pith.
  • Unlike silk flowers made of polyester and plastic, shola is a natural plant product made from the pith of a marshy plant.
  • Since they have hand carved petals, they are perfect for regions where there’s not much sunlight available and won’t wilt like fresh flowers.
