Pampas grass is infamous for its fluffy and textural look. Most commonly used as an accent, dried pampas grass is very versatile, available in many colors, and reads well across many design aesthetics. It is popular exactly because it does not insist on a category and can be anything you want, whether it be farmhouse, minimalist, boho, or coastal. Pampas grass in India can elevate our home decor, doing a lot with just a little.
Why Modern Homeowners are Choosing Dried Pampas Grass
Apart from being so aesthetically versatile in decor, pampas grass is also:
Long Lasting:
Since they are dried, pampas grass can last for up to a year. To ensure its lifespan, store your pampas grass in a vase and place it in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent mold.
Low Maintenance & Eco-Friendly:
If you’ve always wanted to grow plants but have somehow ended up killing them, we have good news for you. Dried pampas grass does not require a green thumb, with practically zero watering and sunlight exposure. Moreover, they are naturally biodegradable. You can think of pampas grass like an aesthetic middle ground between fresh flowers that blacken within a few days and typical plastic flowers.
Versatility:
Since pampas grass doesn’t need sunlight, you can place it anywhere, whether it be your bedroom, coffee table, entryway, bathroom, wedding reception, or dining table. Plus, you can purchase colored pampas grass to match your room’s aesthetic. Some popular pampas decor colors you can explore include white, purple, blue, pink, yellow, and red.
Finding the Perfect Match: Choosing a Pampas Grass Vase
The vase matters more than most people expect. A general practice is to use a bottleneck vase if your pampas plume count is less than 5, and decorative vases with wide mouths if you have many plumes. The general rule of thumb of choosing a vase size is also to match the stem length:
Stem Length
Recommended Vase
Best Placement
Short (25 to 40 cm)
Small Ceramic or Glass Vase
Coffee table, bookshelf, dinner table
Medium (60 to 80 cm)
Mid-Height Vase (30 to 40 cm tall)
Bedside tables, near shoe racks on the floor
Tall (90 to 130 cm)
Floor Vase (45 to 60 cm)
Living room corners, home entryway, hallway corners

Pro-Tips: How to Fluff and Care for Your Pampas Plumes
After You Receive It:
- Remove the pampas from packaging immediately. Leaving it compressed causes the plumes to set in a flattened shape.
- Take the stems outside and shake each one gently to release the initial shed. There will be some fluffy material that comes away. It is natural, not a defect.
- Place the stems in a dry vase (no water) and position near indirect natural light for a day or two. The plumes will open up quite nicely.
- For quicker results, use a hairdryer on a low, cool setting, held about 12 inches from the plume, to coax the fibers apart.
Ongoing Care:
- Keep pampas grass away from direct sunlight. Exposure fades natural beige tones and bleaches out dyed colors faster than normal.
- Keep away from moisture and humidity. Avoid placement in bathrooms and kitchens.
- Avoid high-traffic areas where stems will be repeatedly brushed against.
- Every few months, take a feather duster and lightly pat the dust away from the pampas grass plumes.
Colored Pampas Grass Variants Available At Coastal Habitat
White Pampas Grass
More intentional than the natural beige color of dried pampas, white pampas grass is brighter and cleaner. We suggest it for homes with dark walls or places with minimal interiors.
Purple Pampas Grass
Against white or grey walls, purple plumes in a tall ceramic vase work as the perfect accent to a room. It pairs nicely with rust and deep green palettes, which are common in Indian homes.
Blue Pampas Grass
Blue pampas grass is the most unexpected of the standard variants. Used commonly as a contrast piece, it is mostly seen in baby showers and styled shoots.
Pink Pampas Grass
It is much softer than purple, with a romantic charm that’s perfect if you’re styling a nursery or bedroom.
Yellow Pampas Grass
Yellow pampas grass provides a sunny pop of color to your kitchen or coffee tables. Less brighter than blue pampas, yellow pampas is also frequently used as as an accent.
Red Pampas Grass
If you have a beige-toned home, close your eyes and choose our Moulin Rouge pampas. With its bright color and tendency to stand out, red pampas grass is usually placed in crowded places, like bookshelves or countertops.
How to Shop for Pampas Grass Online in India
The market for dried pampas grass in India has grown a lot over the years. When buying pampas grass online, here are some things you need to check:
- Stem length and plume size: Product listings should list both. They range from 25 to 40 cm for tabletop use to 60 to 65 cm for floor vase arrangements.
- Bundle size: If you’re buying bundles, check if it comes with a vase or not. Also see how many plumes are included so you can calculate how many stems you need based on your vase's opening width.
- Natural vs. dyed: Check if plumes are dyed or undyed. Do note that dyed variants fade faster in direct sunlight.
- Country of origin: Most pampas grass available in India is imported. However, we, at Coastal Habitat, stock domestically and dry our own variants.
- Unboxing video policy: There is a possibility of transit damage for pampas grass so look for sellers like Coastal Habitat that have a clear replacement and return policy (within 3 days of delivery).
