Dried Pampas Grass: The Effortless Decor Trend That Never Goes Out of Style

Dried Pampas Grass: The Effortless Decor Trend That Never Goes Out of Style

Pampas grass has been a fixture in home decor for so long that you'd expect it to go out of fashion by now. On the contrary, walk through any well-styled boho home or scroll through any interior design inspo pics on Pinterest and I can guarantee that you'll find these tall, feathery plumes in a corner or on a shelf. Why? It’s because dried pampas grass is low-maintenance, works in almost any interior style and looks good for years without asking much from your end.

Why Dried Pampas Grass Has Become a Favorite in Modern Interiors

A lot of decor trends stick around because they photograph well. Dried pampas grass is what I like to call a double dhamaka, because it looks good in both photos and in person. They are also incredibly popular for decor because the tall, soft plumes of pampas bring in texture and height which is hard to pull off with most furniture and decor objects. In a house full of hard surfaces like concrete, wood or ceramic, the softness of pampas is a pleasant surprise for most eyes.

Yes, boho interiors are the obvious favorite but pampas grass works just as well in any style of apartment be it minimal, Modern Indian, Scandinavian - literally any style.  Naturally dried pampas grass features a neutral palette of beige and off-white which will rarely clash with the already existing aesthetic of your living space. Finally, it’s very practical to keep if you’re not strong with your green thumb. They don’t need water or sunlight at all and with proper care, they last for at least a year.

Creative Ways to Style Dried Pampas Grass at Home

Statement Floor Vases for Living Rooms

This is my top pick. To make a statement floor vase, you’ll need to place 3 to 5 tall stems in a large vase and keep them in the corners of your living room. The best spots are usually beside sofas, in proximity to windows with indirect light and next to a gallery wall. Interior stylists like me love this styling because it easily adds contrast and texture in decor length without needing an expensive investment into elaborate furniture. For a floor arrangement, make sure the stems are at least 90 to 120 cm so the plumes remain visible through the gap.

Minimalist Shelf Styling

Tucking short plumes into a small vase amongst your books or shelf decor instantly makes things feel more curated. This is my favorite tip if you too have a messy desk cause I place a pampas vase on my book pile to make it look more chic and intentional. The key, however, is treating it as an accent and not the main focus. If you place way too many plumes in the vase, it will appear tacky and confusing.

Bedroom Corner Accents

A mid-height vase with 2 to 3 stems is an excellent option for bedroom accent decor. However, we need to keep in mind that bedrooms are smaller than living rooms. Your bedside table or dressing table is where I’d recommend you place your pampas grass vase. Do ensure to keep it away from AC vents and direct fan airflow since constant air movement dries the stems out faster and increases shedding over time.

Dining Table Centerpieces

If you’re having friends over, I’d go with a compact arrangement of shorter stems in a small vase as the table centerpiece. When styling this, it’s important to keep the plumes as short as possible since taller ones can block sightlines across the table and restrict conversations. To make it fun, you can also explore arrangements with dried bunny tails and shola flowers mixed in.

Dried Pampas Grass vs. Fresh Flowers: Which Is Better for Home Decor?

Obviously, fresh flowers are very beautiful but as a home decor fixture, I wouldn’t go with them. A fresh bouquet lasts a week at most and needs water replacement daily. Basically, it requires a lot of effort and time on your end. Dried pampas grass, on the other hand, sidesteps all of that. They shouldn’t be watered or exposed to direct sunlight and will last for at least a year. This makes it very apartment friendly cause you just place it in one spot and it holds on for 365 days with basic care. The look also stays consistent because they don’t droop or wilt like fresh flowers tend to.

If I’m being honest, fresh flowers are good if you favor the fresh scent. If that is of concern, may I bring to your attention that you can also add 2 to 3 drops of your favorite essential oil to pampas plumes for a nice scent too! In my opinion, I’d always pick the longer lasting dried pampas grass over fresh flowers any day.

How to Care for and Preserve Dried Pampas Grass

  • Keep it out of direct sunlight: A spot with indirect or ambient light preserves the color longer since UV exposure fades the pampas’ natural beige tone.

  • Don't add water: Dried stems and water don't belong together. Adding water to the vase softens the stems and begins reversing the drying process, which shortens the arrangement's lifespan and can cause mold at the base.

  • Fluff the plumes when they arrive: New pampas grass arrives slightly compressed from packaging. So, take it outside, give it a gentle shake and watch as the plumes open up naturally. A light mist of hairspray after fluffing also holds the plumes in place and reduces shedding significantly.

  • Dust occasionally: A gentle shake outside every few months removes most surface dust.

  • Don’t move it often: Moving it around constantly causes the most shedding and breakage. Pick the perfect spot, set it up and let it be.

Things to Consider When Buying Dried Pampas Grass Online

  • Stem length and plume size: Product listings should list both. They range from 25 to 40 cm for tabletop use, 60 to 65 cm for mid-vase arrangements, and 90 to 120 cm for floor vase arrangements.

  • Bundle size: If you’re buying bundles, check if it comes with a vase or not. Also see how many plumes are included so you can calculate how many stems you need based on your vase's opening width.

  • Natural vs. dyed: Check if plumes are dyed or undyed. Do note that dyed variants fade faster in direct sunlight.

  • Country of origin: Most pampas grass available in India are imported. However, we, at Coastal Habitat, stock domestically and dry our own variants.

  • Unboxing video policy: There is a possibility of transit damage for pampas grass so look for sellers like Coastal Habitat that have a clear replacement and return policy (within 3 days of delivery).

For bulk orders (weddings, events, corporate decor), online sellers like Coastal Habitat will have discounted pricing for bulk orders. Reach out to our team for volume discounts.

Conclusion

To summarize, dried pampas grass has stayed in home decor conversations for this long because it has earned its place. It looks good, asks very little of you and holds up in almost any interior style you put it in.
